Hi there, I've recently come back to MUD a little as I randomly remembered the WP days when there was always trouble kicking off in the land... I don't know if it's my playing timings or what, but it's not the case right now, and I've slowly read my way through all the discussions in the Forum about this, and what could be done, etc, etc... and it would be great to see something happen.

So i'm wondering how it's all going? It's no fun playing on your own guys - I remember the rare occasions (2 or 3 of them!) when I got to Necromancer level and was crapping myself at the thought of wandering around the land and getting PKed - and now it's not the same, I want to get PKed a bit, it's exciting! The only thing stopping me doing outrageously well is my own stupidity - that's a harsh thing to know!!

The few people I've seen around have all been nice and good to chat to about my misadventures, but there also really needs to be some newbies to come along and take part... I think some of the (free) capped persona ideas mentioned in the meetings a while back would be really good at getting people started (and then later hooked).

It seems from the numbers of people reading entries in the forums that there's lots of old people still around, waiting for something to happen... Maybe it's just because I'm a crazy socialist, but surely there's some way we can all work together to make the game more popular again - for starters: playing the game a little maybe?!

Thanks! Jon

PS. Can I change my username for this forum somehow? Using your real name on these things is just not the done thing, is it?

<edit> eh up, noticed a grammatical error - can't have that can we!

Well, from what I understand, plans are afoot. I just hope they're not too long in coming, or they may be afoot-in-mouth! aha! ahahahah! hahahahahaha oh dear.

Aah, it's good to hear, can we find out what's happening somehow perhaps?

Anyway, I thought I'd add to my blah blah from yesterday - I had a little idea. It may be a bit late for this kind of thing, but I wasn't thinking about MUD when all the meetings and things happened, so here's my late idea, if you want it...

I'm sure not everyone would like to share the land with 20 rampant teenagers playing capped characters, so what seems like a good idea would be to run two Databases (didn't they do that on WP for a time?), with one being open only to paying members and the other open to paying members and also accessible to capped characters? I think it's really important to get some young 'uns in as in a few years when most of us are too busy, have kids, or can't type anymore, they'll be here to keep the land alive.

And the reason WP was so good at getting them in was because you didn't need a credit card to play - just a phone line. And everyone knows your parents pay for that - easy! However, getting them to let you use their credit card to pay for a months membership is another story all together!

Anyway, whatever's going on, it'd be good to hear about it...

Thanks, Jon

Well of course, the phoneline thing only worked because in those days everyone connected via dial-up. Nearly everyone I know has broadband these days, so that's out of the window.

As for what's happening. Try asking a wizard. "No comment" was the best I got out of Hawumph.

Hi,

I can change your name if you like, what would you like it changed to? Note that this will also change your website login.

In response to your suggestion about running two databases (one for capped people), I don't think it would work - firstly, you'd have one anarchic game and one near-empty game. The idea of the free/capped players is to increase the number of players, this would just divide them.

As Halen correctly pointed out, there are plans afoot which you've no doubt picked up on from other posts by Karya and me. We haven't been deliberately trying to keep people in the dark, but unless plans are concrete, talking about them too early can just lead to disappointment.

However, we can give you a flavour of our current plans for mud:

1. The land design competition - players have indicated that they would like to have new areas in The Land to explore, and also that they'd like to contribute to the game, specifically designing areas for The Land. This competition was aimed at satisfying those requests. Although the new areas will only be a small addition to The Land, it's something to build on.

2. Newbies - this is always a priority, but we have no magic solution. This is actually two problems a) attracting and b) keeping newbies. Although you probably don't realise, we don't have too much of a problem attracting newbies, it's keeping them that's the real problem - although we could always do with attracting more!

3. Alternative pricing model - there have been some interesting proposals put forward during recent discussions, and there are a number of these that we are keen to investigate further. Before we can adopt any new pricing model, we have to consider its effect in the long term as well as what's best for now. If we do adopt a new pricing model, it will take some time to put into place as it must be both right for the game and also implemented smoothly.

These plans can't be viewed in isolation, as this is an iterative process, but hopefully this has shown you what we've been up to.

Foddy

Interesting. Thanks Foddy!

What about the promotional ideas? New client for coverdisks etc?

*pushes it!*

Oh yes - I forgot about that. I'm developing a client for this purpose (see earlier posts about this).

Sounds good, thanks for the info! Also things were pretty exciting in the land today, I got attacked (and killed) by people several times, wooohoo! I guess I made an open invitation for people to PK me - I was never going to make wiz anyway!

If you don't mind Foddy could you just change my username to Jon? That would be great... Though I think I took that username on an account I made here a few years ago, so maybe you can't let me have that. In which case, how about something like Toff, or Chav?

Cheers! Jon

Hey there Jon,
what's going on?
I revisted the land thinking your comments fair,
but when I get there you're never there.
So take your own advice, now son!

True! It turns out that things have gotten very busy for me since posting that message, haven't had time to play at all, though things look like they'll be calming down in a few weeks now... Hope you guys are all having fun out there, Jon
