I've been studying the index page of the General Topics.

Let's take Hal's thread about the ladder dated 4th July.

There are I suggest about 20 regular mortal players and adding 5 Wizzes and Arch Wizzes would make 25 players who might reasonably expect to view this item.

The topic hasn ever been commented upon by Hal or anyone else. So there has been no reason for anyone to read it twice. But for the sake of arument let us assume that evryone has looked at it an excessive 4 times each. That would be 100 viewings - an esimate very much on the high side.

Yet it shows there have been 137 viewings. Who are these people?

If you look at other threads you will find same of of thing, though perhaps not to the same extent. There is a hidden audience here.

I view every topic at least 23 times because I like reading my own name in print.

Bots are little things that are sent out by search engines. They 'read' the content of a site. This helps the search engine to list and sort sites.

One forum I'm on has a page which lists currently active members and what they are doing, i.e. reading a topic, writing a personal message or whatever.

On many occasions one comes across a 'bot' from google or somesuch which is described as 'Reading a topic on Serious Chat'.

There you go Royston. ?50.
