Can anybody please tell me what a bounty is. How does it work? What are its effects? Why do it to someone?

Or altenatively point me to a link where I can find out.

The CONTRACT command is a means of increasing the value of another
player, usually with the intention of inducing people to attack said player.
The basic syntax is CONTRACT <pla> WITH <amount>, where <pla> is the
player upon whose head you want to put a bounty, and <amount> is a string
indicating the number of score points you wish to expend on this activity.
Your own score will be reduced by <amount>, and, for the purposes of
determining their value only, <pla>'s will increase by <amount>.
For example, if you were on 6,000 points and FRED was on 8,000,
FRED's value would be 1,675 initially. If you were then to CONTRACT FRED
WITH "1500", your own score would drop by 1,500 to 4,500 and FRED would
increase in value to 1,975 although he would still remain on 8,000 points.
Although further CONTRACTs can increase the amount on FRED's head, any
bounty in excess of his actual number of points will be ignored; if FRED
stays on 8,000 points, only 8,000 points of bounty will be considered, and
therefore the most he can be worth without increasing his score is 3,275.
There are only four ways a CONTRACT can be removed: 1) the victim
dies; 2) the victim makes wiz; 3) the victim VOWs and becomes a protected
persona (protected personae can have no bounties on them); 4) the victim
pays off the contract by a CONTRACT ME WITH <amount> command (which knocks
<amount> off the bounty on the victim's head).
NB: if <pla> is not playing at the moment, CONTRACT will not work.
If you want to put a CONTRACT on someone who is not currently playing, you
can do so by putting their name as a string, eg. CONTRACT "FREDA" WITH
"2000".
The minimum amount you can CONTRACT anyone with is 750.
A list of all current CONTRACTs is maintained in the book entitled
"Rogues Gallery".

Thank you Zedar. Now I know why this game is called MUD. It will take several readings through for me to get to grips with this. No doubt I will work it out in the end.

Thanks again.

In short, if you add a bounty to someone, it will add 20% of the amount of the contract to the kill-value of that player.

So if you type CONTRACT "BLIB" WITH "1000" then blib will be worth 200 points extra when I kill him on his way to the TS. That 200 will show up when you VAL him. Blib can undo the bounty by contracting himself with the same amount (1000).

No one really uses bounties anymore. You can look up the people with the highest bounty in the Rogues Gallery, but at one stage it was fashionable to give yourself giant bounties and now its full of characters that don't play anymore. I reckon it should be wiped.

Yes I understand it now.

So if I wanted someone more skilful than me to kill the player who last killed me I could put a a bounty on him. If only I knew who it was.

As the Rouges Gallery seems to be in some impossibly difficult place to get to whenever I log on, I have had to look at the copy on Heiach's site. I would have expected it to consist of some very unpleasant characters. But those names I do recognise (about 50% of them) without exception belong to some of the nicest people playing.

I find that a bit strange.

I like the 20% guide. Looking at LEVELS,the ratio between score and value is not constant. At 200 points (Protector level) the val is 57.4% and it gradually drops to 20.0% at Mage. As bounties seem to be conferred only on HiLife 20% is a good rule of thumb.

The formula for value is:

(score / 5) + 75

So values are 20% of score, once you factor in that values start from 75 on a zero score.

Of course it is. I should have seen that for myself.
