Absolutely. Ideally I'd find one or two other programmers that know C# that might be able to dabble in the code base.

Silly, at your service

What I think is the hardest is the newbie-hooking material. What three pages of three paragraphs do we want them to read in order to decide that Mud2 is the one for them?

I agree with Cradle. It's got to be bite-sized amounts. Each easily digested, involving without being too waffly.

Would this be material for the main/home page? Getting the home page right is probably the hardest thing to do. Nightshiver pointed out what we don't have in his post
here

Well from a newbie perspective, there is almost nothing that leaps out and says "Join me i am Fun" No screenshots, no testimonials, pretty dull site.

Do you think it's worth having a screenshot? I don't know ... it's a text-based game. It doesn't look very pretty. Maybe it's worth it once we've got a pretty, newbie client?

What are the (newbie-grabbing) essentials for the home page?

I think we should put a screenshot up there. Because if they're going to be scared by text then they're going to be scared off anyway.

Pure text IS going to be offputting. So the problem we need to address is how to dress up the text so that it does look interesting. I don't know if that's a-la-Wireplay / Diablo-esque etc.

What does look best to a newbie, because we need to know that if we're to come up with an effective client.

Nightshiver was right. We need some testamonials. Can we start accumulating them now?

For a little tour for the website couldnt you redirct to as new a page and use back and next buttons so they have the time to read it as the please. i notice with muds that i tend to try out every now and then the tours are to much text and not enough time to actualy read it, and scrolling up can be a pain, because by the time you've finished you have missed like 2-3 more tour information.

That sounds like it should work. All we need is someone to implement it now!

I'm sure Havoc will contact you about the client, and I'll drop you a mail about the web site shortly.

Now if that tour was interactive, and available from the Newbie home page, that may help.

The home page would ideally appeal to Newbies - what do they come to the game to do?
Kill, get points / levels / treasure / progress or finish game, socialise, but generally have fun.

Perhaps emphasize these parts of the game and lead to other web pages with hints on how to achieve them ( a bit of LExleys info etc. may work ), with logs or tour style info?

Wouldn't that be the same as playing the tour in-game?

An idea could be to ditch the front-end for immediate newbies completly, i.e they type in a persona name and it just drops them in the t-room with "This appears to be your first...". It has obvious problems though...what if the persona name is in use? What happends when they qq? They have to deal with the menu at some point, will it be more confusing when they do? But hey, just a thought!

One thing about tour0 is that it would be good if it mentioned that other tours exist at its conclusion.

Website Update:

Karya and I have been working on the home page of the new website, and have made some progress. If you're interested in giving feedback on what we've done so far, please contact Karya.

Thank you to everyone who are already helping, but we are looking for more people to help with the development of the website in order to complete the site rapidly, in particular:

  • People to develop "modules" for the site - preferably with knowledge of PHP.
  • A graphic artist to help with some artwork for the client, probably cartoon-style.

If you're interested in helping, please mail me at foddy@mudii.co.uk.

Thanks!
